Saving Files

Do not save your files to the hard drive. Each user is required to provide their own floppy disk, zip disk, or USB flash drive to store their personal data. Disks and USB flash drives are not available in the academic computing labs. They may, however, be purchased in the college bookstore.

Group Study in the Academic Computing Center

In an effort to reduce noise in ACC open lab, vacant Academic Computing Center classrooms will be provided, when available, for group study. The room is only available to registered students who need to work on a group project that requires software available only in Academic Computing Center.

Wireless laptops are available for use in the Library in conjunction with the Library's group study rooms.

Retrieving Files from the Network TEMP Folder
Each of the IBM Networks has a space for the temporary storage of files. This space is intended to facilitate the quick distribution of files between students and instructors. In general, students should not place files on the network for any other purposes. The folder can be found via Windows Explorer in G:\TEMP. You should copy files from G:\TEMP and place them onto your floppy drive to work on. A quick way to do this is to right-click on the folder you would like to copy and select "Send to 3 1/2 floppy (A)" from the popup menu that appears. Be sure to copy all of the files that your students may have left before you leave the lab. The G:\TEMP folder is emptied each night after the lab closes. After the end of the day, you will need to get a copy of the files from your student.

Placing Files into the Network TEMP Folder
You and your students will be able to place files into this folder, but will not be able to modify or delete them after they have been placed there. It works best to prepare your work in a folder on a floppy or zip disk and then copy the directory to G:\TEMP. Remember that the G:\TEMP folder is emptied each night after the lab closes.

Accessing your CDNET account (U: drive)
Faculty that have a CDNET account may access their U: drive in the labs by signing onto the network using the long form of their login id, which is .username.cdnet.cod, where username is the part of their College email address before the @ symbol. The password would be the same password used when signing onto the network and not the email password. When signed in using this procedure, the drive mappings for the labs will not be active. To find the lab drives, use the following path:

\\AC4\SYS\WIN95 for G: drive in ACC, SCC

Accessing your folder on the G: drive
If you have a CDNET account, you can have your own folder set up on the G: drive which would allow you to place files on the lab networks. You would then sign on to your CDNET account (using the instructions listed above when in the lab) and use Windows Explorer to find your folder.

In the lab, when you and your students sign on as WINXP, you will be able to read from and write to, but not delete from your folder on the G: drive. Files in your folder are not deleted automatically and space is limited, so please delete files from your Network Folders (by logging in to your CDNET account) when they are no longer needed. To request a folder on the G: drive, call the Information Technology Helpdesk at 630-942-4357.

Software/Datafile Installation/Upgrade in an Academic Lab
A Software Installation/Modification Request Form must be completed with each software package or data file you would like installed or upgraded in an Academic Lab. Be sure to indicate the number of copies to be installed as well as the location where you would like the software installed. Failure to do this will delay in the installation of your software.

When the form is complete, attach it to the license agreement that states that the College is authorized to install the number of copies you have requested for installation. Send your completed request, the license agreement, and the software to Manager of Office & Classroom Technology, SRC 3627. Please use a separate Software Installation/Modification Request Form for each software package. You must allow six weeks for the installation of software or data files.

Classroom Reservations
Up to 1 hour and 20 minutes of computer lab time can be booked per class, per day by any faculty member who needs access to one of the computer classroom labs. There are two phases to classroom scheduling:
  • Priority Scheduling--specific rooms are designated for specific disciplines. These disciplines control the scheduling for time in these rooms.
  • Open Scheduling--any faculty member can reserve any classroom on a first come, first served basis. See your division office for exact dates for open scheduling for each quarter.

All classroom scheduling is handled through your division office.

Please be aware that students will not be allowed into the classroom when you are not present. Please make sure all students have left and that the door is locked at the end of your scheduled lab time.

Open Lab Printing
A Print Card is REQUIRED to print in the Open Lab areas of the Academic Computing Center and KLAB as well as in the Addison, Naperville, and Westmont Regional Centers. A card can be purchased from the Print Card vending machine located near the Open Lab or in the Library. The Library Print Center supports over-the counter sales of Print Cards and has two Print Card vending machines. The Library Print Center accepts cash or checks for Print Card transactions, makes change, and accepts cash for prints. The other labs cannot make change for the Print Card Vending machines. Instructions for using the vending machines are posted at each unit.
Purchasing a Print Card
  • A new empty Print Card costs $1. A new card has zero copies on it! The cost for a usable new card is a $2 minimum. (One dollar for the card, plus one dollar to add the first 15 copies.)
  • To add copies to a new card or a empty card, reinsert the card into the vending machine. Insert money. Each dollar adds 15 copies to the card. The vending machines accept $1 to $20 bills. Please be aware that vending machines DO NOT give change. A $10 bill immediately adds 150 copies to your card.
Print Card Tips
  • We recommend you do not have more than 150 copies ($10) on you card.
  • Always PRINT your name on a new card. The college is not responsible for the replacement of lost, stolen or damaged cards. Found cards, with names on them, are held for 30 days. Cards without identification are not held. Cards held in the Library are at the Print Center. Cards held in the ACC are at the Distribution Center.
  • Do not throw out and "empty" card -- recharge it. You do not have to wait until the card is empty to recharge it.
  • To Print a document, your card must have at least the same number of pages as the total pages in the print job. After it is sent to the print queue, you cannot print only a portion of that print job.
Print Card Policies
  • Used cards or unused copies on a card cannot be refunded. If you have multiple cards, we will transfer copies from one card to another. No refunds or credits are issued for extra cards.
  • Cash refunds are not given for defective prints. If a defect is due to our hardware or software problem, we will credit your print card or reprint the pages at no cost.
  • You must pay for all pages you print. Most software programs have a "print preview" function to help you select only the pages you need, before you send it to the print queue. We do not refund or offer credits for "extra" printed pages. The print queue displays the total number of pages for each print job before you print it. If it appears to be too many pages, do not print it. Ask for assistance.
  • The College reserves the right to replace a print card with an encoding error. Cards displaying an "ER" message or cards displaying over 300 copies have encoding errors. Replacement cards are issued with no more that 150 copies.
  • If you accidentally purchased a new card when you intended to recharge an existing card, immediately bring both cards to the Print Center service desk in the Library, or the Distribution Center is the ACC. We will credit your existing card with 15 copies in exchange for the new card. (The exchanged card must be empty and in like-new condition.)
Laser printouts are printed on recycled paper provided by the computer lab. The laser printers are restricted to student and community use, commercial use is prohibited. All printers will be turned off five minutes before closing.

Seminar Scheduling
Requests for classroom time for a seminar or a conference should be sent to Keith Zeitz, Manager of Office and Classroom Technology. You must include the name of the person leading the conference, special equipment and software needs, and the time and date required. If specific software is necessary, please allow at least six weeks for installation. Testing of equipment and software before the seminar or conference is strongly encouraged. Special arrangements must be made to test software during break periods, holidays, or any time outside the normal operating hours of the computer labs.

Lab Aide Information
Lab aides are in the lab to help students log into and out of applications, print their work, and to check out materials. They are not able to help students with applications or assignments.

The Academic Computing Center, K Computer Complex, and Naperville and Westmont Regional Centers hire eligible students to fill open lab aide positions. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain additional computer knowledge. Student employees must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Enrollment for at least 6 credit hours of college level courses (or acceptable remedial courses) for each quarter except summer quarter and must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. Some prior experience using computers would be helpful.
  • Not more than 20 hours per week may be worked during Spring, Fall, and Winter quarters. The pay rate for student workers is currently $7.00 per hour. If you have any students who may be interested in working in these labs, please refer them to Human Resources, SRC2053, to apply
