Recommended Components

The supported configurations for access to the Enterprise network and the Internet at the College of DuPage are as follows:

  • Win 95/98 or Win NT or Mac OS 8.5.x Operating System
  • 20MB hard disk space
  • Modem minimum speed 28.8 v .34
  • 16MB memory
  • Enterprise network account

Connecting to COD in Windows XP

Configuring Dial-Up modem Networking in WindowsXP using the New Connection Wizard

  • From start open Control Panel and open Network and Internet Connections.
  • Under Pick a task… select and open Set up or change your Internet Connection.
  • Under or pick a Control Panel icon open Network Connections.
  • From the Network Tasks menu open Create a new connection.
  • Click on Next.
  • Select Connect to Internet and click Next.
  • Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
  • Select Connect using dial-up modem and click Next.
  • Type a name for this connection that will identify it for you, (e.g. College of DuPage). Click Next.
  • Enter the College of DuPage access number 630-942-0140 in the phone number field and click Next. Note: You may or may not need to dial the area code depending on your location or precede the area code with a 1, these call characteristics are determined by your local telephone company. This call should be dialed just as you would a normal telephone call to the College of DuPage.
  • Enter your COD network ID for the User name. Enter your COD network password for the Password and confirm it by typing it again.
  • If you want anyone who uses the computer to be able to access the Internet through your account, check the box Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer. If you uncheck this box you will need to login each time.
  • Select Make this the default Internet connection, if you want this to be your primary ISP connection. If you uncheck this box you will be asked which ISP you would like to connect with each time you login.
  • Select Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection, if you don't want people to be able to access your computer while you are online. If you uncheck this box it will be easier for people to access your computer over the internet.
  • After you have made your choices, select Next.
  • Select Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop if you would like a shortcut to the College of DuPage ISP services on your desktop. Select Finish to complete setting up your internet connection.

Installing Network Components (TCP/IP) for Windows 95/98

In order to dial into the college, you must have TCP/IP installed on your computer. To install TCP/IP on your computer follow these directions. Note: Exit all applications and have your Windows 95/98 CD-Rom available.
  • Click Start and select Settings/Control Panel to display the Control Panel.
  • Double-click on Network to display the Network properties.
  • Select the Configuration Tab to display the list of installed network components in the dialog box. Note: If TCP/IP is listed in the dialog box, TCP/IP has already been installed. Close this box and proceed to the Configuring Dial-Up Networking in Windows 95/98 section of this document.
  • Click on the Add button. The Select Network Component Type dialog box is displayed.
  • Select Protocol and click on the Add button to display the Select Network Protocol dialog box. A list of Manufacturers is displayed in the left box and the corresponding Network Protocols is listed in the right box.
  • Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers and TCP/IP from the list of Network Protocols.
  • Select OK to continue and return to the Network Properties window.
  • Select the Identification Tab.
  • Type your login ID at the Computer Name field. (e.g. smithm)
  • Type COD at the Workgroup field.
  • Click on OK to continue. Insert the Windows 95/98 CD-Rom if prompted. The system will install the selected component.
  • Reboot your computer when process is complete to allow the settings to take effect.

Configuring Dial-Up Networking in Windows 95/98

Dial-Up Networking must be installed on your computer to attach to COD. This section assumes that you do not already have Dial-Up Networking installed. If you do, skip this section and advance to the Creating a Shortcut to COD in Windows 95/98 section of this document.
  • Insert the Windows 95/98 CD-Rom in your drive.
  • Select Start/Run to display the Run dialog box.
  • Select Browse and display the CD-Rom drive of your computer.
  • Select Setup.exe to display the Setup window.
  • Click on the Add/Remove Software button.
  • Click on the Windows Setup tab.
  • Select Communications and double-click on Communications again to display the Components section.
  • Check the box in front of Dial-Up Networking to select the option.
  • Click on OK on the Communications screen.
  • Click on Apply on the Dial-Up Networking screen. Your computer will copy files.
  • Reboot your computer when prompted to do so.

Creating a Shortcut to COD in Windows 95/98

  • Double-click on My Computer to display the My Computer application window.
  • Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking folder. If the startup wizard begins, skip the next step.
  • Double-click on the Make a New Connection icon to begin the startup wizard.
  • Type Dial-up COD at the name for the connection dialog box. Click on Next to continue.
  • Type 1-630-942-0140 at the telephone number dialog box. Click on Next to continue.
  • Select Finish at the next screen to continue.
  • Select OK at the install dial-up adapter screen to install the adapter. When complete an icon labeled Dial-Up COD will be displayed in the Dial-Up Networking folder.
  • Click one time on the Dial-Up COD icon to select it.
  • Position the pointer on the icon and press and hold the right mouse button.
  • Drag the icon to your desktop. Select OK when prompted to create a shortcut on the desktop.

Connecting to COD in Windows 95/98

  • Double-click on the Dial-Up COD icon from your desktop.
  • Type your COD Network Logon User Name at the User name dialog box. (Example: smithj)
  • Type your COD Network Password at the password dialog box.
  • Click on Connect to establish a connection to COD. You will hear your modem open and dial the phone number. Once the connection is established, a screen will appear stating that you are connected to COD at a certain speed. Note: This connection speed will vary depending on your modem and the phone line you are using.

  • Reboot your computer when prompted to do so.

Setting Security in Windows NT

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon from your desktop.
  • Select Dial-Up Networking and select the More option.
  • Click on Edit from the Modem Properties drop down menu.
  • Click on Server tab. Confirm that the TCP/IP option is selected.
  • Select IPX/SPX if you wish to access network files.
  • Click on Security tab. Confirm that the accept any authentication including clear text is selected.

Creating a Shortcut to COD in Windows NT

  • Double-click on My Computer to display the My Computer application window.
  • Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking folder. The Server screen appears.
  • Check on all option boxes that apply and click on Next to continue. The Phone screen appears.
  • Type 1-630-942-0140 at the Phone dialog box. Click on Next to continue.
  • Type Dial-up COD at the name for the connection dialog box. Click on Next to continue. The Serial Line Protocol screen is displayed.
  • Select Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and click on Next to continue. The Login Script Screen is displayed.
  • Select none and click on Next to continue. The IP Address Screen is displayed.
  • Click on Next to continue. the Name Server Address Screen is displayed.
  • Type 192.217.1.3 at the DNS Server prompt. Leave the WINS Server settings as they are.
  • Select Finish.

Connecting to COD in Windows NT

  • Double-click on the Dial-Up COD icon from your desktop.

Internet Setup Assistant

It is necessary that OT and OT/PPP are installed on your computer.
  • Select Apple Menu/Internet Access. The Internet Access window is displayed.
  • Select Internet Setup Assistant.
  • Select Yes to begin the setup wizard. The Introduction screen appears.
  • Select Continue. The Configuration name and connection type screen appears.
  • Type COD in the name box.
  • Select Modem at the connection type. Select Continue to display the Modem Settings window.
  • Select your Modem from the displayed list. Select the correct port for the modem. Click on continue to display the Configuration Information screen.
  • Type 1-630-942-0140 at the phone number dialog box. Enter your network login name and network password at the appropriate prompt. Select Continue. The PPP Connect Scripts screen is displayed.
  • Select No and Continue to continue. The IP Address screen is displayed.
  • Select No and Continue to continue. The Domain Name Server screen is displayed.
  • Type 192.217.1.3 at the name server dialog box. Click on Continue. The E-mail account and host computer screen is displayed.
  • Leave all options blank and click on Continue to continue. The Newsgroup Host Computer screen is displayed.
  • Enter News if you would like to access newsgroups.
  • Select No at the proxy server prompt. Click on Continue. The Conclusion screen is displayed.
  • Select Show Details to display the details and make any changes.
  • Select on Go Ahead to save the changes. NOTE: Uncheck Connect when finished if you do not wish to connect now.

Troubleshooting

  • Confirm that your modem is configured properly per your manufacturer's directions.
  • Check the power on your modem if it is an external modem.
  • Make sure you are using your NETWORK logon and password not your email logon and password.
  • Make sure you have the correct phone number.
