Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I think the batteries are dead in my remote. What do I do?
A. First, verify that the remote is turned on. There is an on/off switch on the side of the remote. The switch needs to be in the on position for the remote to operate. When the remote is powered on, the red light in the top center of the remote will flicker each time a button on the remote is pressed. If the red light is working, you may need to aim the remote more directly at the front of the projector to turn it on. In some cases you may be able to bounce the signal off the screen and to the projector.

If the remote is turned on and the red light still does not flicker when you press the buttons on the remote, the batteries may need to be replaced. Call the help desk at extension 4357 and they will have new batteries sent to your room.

Please remember to shut the remote off when you are finished using the projector so that the batteries are operational for the next class!

Q. How do I get the best image from the document camera?
A. The document cameras excel at displaying three-dimensional objects and large print. For example, you can place a molecular model, palm pilot, or even a printed circuit board under the camera and be able to rotate the model, zoom in, and display the image on the screen in the front of the room in a way that would not be possible with a traditional overhead projector.

The trade off to using the document camera is a loss of resolution when compared to an overhead with transparencies. The system works by slicing the image into tiny lines and then sending that information to the projector. That causes a loss of image clarity as the image is "re-assembled" by the projector. You can get a good-looking image even from printed text by following a few simple tips.

TIPs

·         Use a large font when printing text to be displayed on the document camera. 16pt or better is recommended. Orient any printed pages as landscape instead of portrait.

·         The default camera settings result in the best picture.

    • Make sure the white balance is set to AUTO
    • The exposure should be set to "0"
    • Set the focus to auto.

·         Use the zoom feature to expand or narrow the view

·         If you have traditional transparencies, you may have better luck with a traditional overhead projector. Call AV distribution if there are none located in your room.

Q. I'd like to play a DVD, how can I do that?
A. All classrooms have DVD players built into the computer. To play simply insert the DVD into the computer's DVD-ROM drive. The DVD player should start automatically.

Q. I'd like my classroom to become a Technology Enhanced Classroom. What's the process for designating a classroom for being upgraded to a Technology Enhanced Classroom?
A. As part of the IT planning process input is gathered from stakeholders regarding future technology needs. These needs are formalized and submitted as IT plan initiatives. Administrators, matching need to available funding sources, then prioritize all requests. If you would like your room to become a Technology Enhanced Classroom, discuss the need with your administrator and work to have it submitted as an IT Plan initiative. The Administrator will then prioritize your request along with any others that they receive. If funding is not available for the current fiscal year, the initiative may be carried over to the following year, where it will be reviewed again.

Q. I see there is a Technology Enhanced Classroom next door and am ready to use it. How can I get scheduled in the room?
A. Your division office handles scheduling of the Technology Enhanced Classrooms. Contact them for details on how to get scheduled in one of the classrooms.

Q. I am in a non-technology enhanced classroom. I see there is a network jack in the room, but don’t know if it is active or not. How do I find out if it is active?

A. All classrooms in the IC building have network jacks, but not all of them connect to our network in the telecommunication closets. This was done to eliminate the expense of purchasing networking hardware for jacks that were not used. If you need to use a jack in an IC classroom you can contact the helpdesk to have the jack connected/verified.
