Illinois Geographical Society

Join the IGS on Saturday, December 10, for our first winter Field Day. We'll be in the Lemont/Woodridge area, exploring various temples and churches. Lunch will be at the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago. The afternoon will be at Argonne National Laboratory.

The IGS is saying goodbye to its longtime journal, Bulletin of the Illinois Geographical Society. Starting with 2011, the journal is now Illinois Geographer. Look for yours in the mail shortly.

Would you like to submit an article to Illinois Geographer? Send your ideas or submissions to Editor Jill Thomas.

The IGS is on Facebook. You can see photos of our previous meetings and field days, and keep up with current IGS happenings.

Promoting Geography in Illinois

The Illinois Geographical Society seeks to promote scientific research in geography, encourage better teaching of geography at all levels, diffuse geographic knowledge, and to unify geographic interest in the state. The Society's peer-reviewed journal, Bulletin of the Illinois Geographical Society, is published twice-yearly. All members and subscribing institutions receive the Bulletin automatically. Articles published in the Bulletin deal with all aspects of geography, including geographic education and research in the various subdisciplines. Book reviews also appear.

Meetings

The Society holds its annual meetings in the spring at various sites in the state. Typically this meeting stretches from Thursday night through Saturday morning and involves professional papers, workshops, food functions, and a field trip.  At the annual meeting of the National Council for Geographic Education, Society members hold a breakfast meeting. Breakfasts have occurred around the United States as well as Mexico, Jamaica, Canada, and the Dominican Republic.

Awards

The Illinois Geographical Society provides three separate student awards, as well as the Distinguished Geographer Award. Visit the awards page for more information.
