Medical
Assistant Degree Program
In recent
years the medical assistant profession has become one of the ten
fastest-growing careers in health care. Not only have physicians
become more dependent on medical assistants, but their services are
also being sought after by hospitals, clinics and nursing homes,
as well as medical supply businesses, home health agencies, insurance
companies and pharmaceutical companies.
A medical assistant is multi-skilled position that bridges the gap between a
traditional nurse and a medical office administrator. In addition to office duties
such as maintaining medical records, ordering equipment, filling out insurance
forms and scheduling appointments, a medical assistant also takes patient histories
and vital signs, prepares patients for examination, collects blood specimens
and performs basic lab tests. The “generalist” nature of this type
of career provides a backdrop for work that is interesting, varied and fun.
College of DuPage offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree Medical
Assistant program that prepares students to perform both administrative and clinical
procedures in a medical office setting.
