English as a Second Language (ESL)

PLEASE NOTE: Academic ESL is changing its name to ELS – English Language Studies effective Fall 2016.

Learn English by taking classes in one of the following programs: 


Academic ESL


Adult ESL



Learn English for academic and professional purposes. 

  • Getting a degree
  • Updating or advancing a current profession
  • Reading, writing, listening and speaking about complex subjects

Learn English for success in daily living. 

  • Going to stores and restaurants
  • Handling the monthly bills
  • Developing better workplace communication

Immigration Note:

  • Students with B, F, J and M visas ARE NOT eligible for this program. Students with H visas ARE eligible


  • Provides smaller class sizes
  • Targets specific skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
  • Prepares students to communicate with high levels of fluency
  • Prepares students for academic level classes 
  •  Free to residents and citizens
  • Offered in many locations
  • No previous English necessary 


Previous Education:

  • It is recommended that students have finished high school in their country or in the U.S. 
  • Students can enter with any level of education


Levels of English:

  •  For high beginning to high advanced learners of English

    If students plan to study a degree or certificate at College of DuPage or need English for professional purposes, we welcome them to enroll directly into Academic ESL.



  • For zero level to high intermediate learners of English

    If students have never studied English before, they may find it helpful to start with Adult ESL classes. After they build their ESL skills, they are welcome to transition into the Academic ESL program.
