Teaching
and Learning on the MUVE: Second Life!
Workshop Credit: Participants will
receive 1 semester hour and 10 workshop hours
Facilitator: Denise Cotè
5-2 hour class sessions +15 hours of course-related practice and study (Students
should be prepared to spend at least 5 outside hours on their own to become
proficient using the Second Life software.)
First Class: Saturday July 12 9:30-11:30 a.m. in room (TBA)
Subsequent classes will be held in Second Life and the group will determine
the days and times. Since this is an immersive environment, frequent meetings
are preferable. Course will need to be completed by August 16, 2008. This course
is available to all C.O.D. staff members.
In this course, attendees will learn about recent movements in teaching and learning in online virtual environments, or MUVE’s (multi-user virtual environments). We will explore and discuss the pedagogical implications of employing enhanced reality in our “classrooms” and the efficacy of 3D interactive simulations on student learning. We will tour educational spaces in the Second Life MUVE, participate in virtual discussions with other community college faculty and participate in augmented reality/immersive learning situations in Second Life. Each participant will get a Second Life account and avatar and learn basic to intermediate techniques in ambulation and communication in Second Life. Students will be responsible for outside reading, independent exploration of the Second Life world and will be expected to participate in class discussions. A relatively new computer and a broadband internet connection at home will be required to participate. System Requirements: http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.ph
