Dear College of DuPage Supervisors:
It is important to the College that it has a well trained supervisory staff. The work that you do and the leadership you provide are vitally important to fostering a strong organization. The colleagues you supervise and serve expect your commitment to excellence. Outstanding supervision is required in order for us to successfully reach individual, departmental and College goals.
To support this initiative, and at the recommendation of the Great Workplace Team, the Cabinet chartered two cross-functional and cross-constituency Continuous Improvement (CI) teams to assess the current process for training supervisors, identify strategies to improve the effectiveness of the training, and ensure that training and professional development are implemented and included as a part of the evaluation process.
The team completed its analysis and recommended a process designed to both
strengthen the skills of our current supervisors and better orient new College
of DuPage supervisors to procedures, methods, and College expectations. The
Cabinet approved the proposal with input from the Leadership Council. I have
reviewed the analysis, discussed the issues, and I am in full support of the
recommendations.
| Therefore, beginning immediately in 2005, supervisors are required to complete 12 supervisory sessions over a two-year timeframe. These sessions have been designed to provide information and tools to help College of DuPage supervisors succeed in their supervisory roles. The required sessions are the following: | |
| • Annual Feedback – Making it Effective | • Preventing Sexual Harassment |
| • Classified Job Descriptions and Range Placement | • Safety and Hazardous Materials |
| • College of DuPage Hiring Process | • Supervisory Orientation |
| • Conflict Resolution | • How to Supervise People |
| • Continuous Improvement | • Workplace Violence/Drug Free Workplace |
| • Using COD’s Classified Discipline Policy for Positive Results | • Understanding Budgeting and Purchasing at College of DuPage |
These sessions are mandatory for administrators, supervisory classified staff, and faculty who supervise classified staff as part of the normal workload and will be offered through the Teaching and Learning Center. Advanced skills building sessions will also be available through the TLC. Details about the program and other available options are available through the TLC website.
The TLC will be inviting your suggestions to refine and monitor supervisory training sessions. I encourage you to participate and look forward to your feedback. Please provide any comments to your constituency leadership.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sunil Chand
President
