We will discuss various ways to offer exceptional services to our external and internal customers. We will learn how to recognize and appreciate their concerns and needs, empathize with their feelings, and how we go the extra mile in serving them well. We will also examine ways to develop flexibility and common sense as we uphold the institutional rules and regulations.

The merit of quality customer service will be further illustrated in the “Other Side of the Window” video. The DVD will show the value of good customer service from both sides of a service “window.” In theory, an employee gives outstanding services to customers. In return, the employee receives similar exceptional services from other businesses. This practical example describes the significance of implementing and receiving superior customer service

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Plagiarism and the New MLA and APA Citation Styles
Workshop Hours: 3
Facilitator: Karla Aleman

Thurs., 10/29—1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.— SRC 3017—NO CODE REQUIRED

Heard the news? The Modern Language Association of America has published a new research paper style manual, the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (7th Edition, 2009). To add to the fun, the American Psychological Association has also produced a new publishing style manual, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th Edition, 2010). Many of the changes in the new MLA and APA styles revolve around a concern over the fluid nature of online information and how people can retrieve it. It's an excellent opportunity to brainstorm techniques to assist students with the ethical use of information found in nontraditional sources.

This workshop will consist of two parts: first, an introduction to the MLA and APA citation style changes, including in-class practice for building new citations and a demonstration of the best ways to traverse student bibliographies and find their sources; and second, a brainstorming session to discuss instructing students on the ethical use of information, including the incorporation of in-class plagiarism discussions, techniques to spot plagiarism in student bibliographies, and options for heading off problems with the style changes in the classroom and the college.

Tues., 11/10— 12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.— HSC 1117—GENL-0509-001

This workshop is worth 3 workshop hours.

In Fall 2008, 76.5% of College of DuPage's first-time students indicated on their application that they planned to transfer. As an adviser, providing students with accurate transfer information is of critical importance. However, transfer advising can sometimes be confusing and daunting. This workshop will provide you with the resources and tools necessary to feel confident as you work with students in advising for transfer. Also at the workshop, a panel of local admissions representatives, representing a state university, a small private college, and a university offering non-traditional programs, will share with us what our students should know, and do, to best prepare for transfer.
