This tip applies to Excel 2002.
Occasionally you’d like to have multiple line headings at the top of columns in your spreadsheet. “Simple,” you say. “Just press the enter key and type into the cell below.” This will work, but is what we call a bad solution, because it will cause problems later when we try to use additional features of Excel.
The better solution is to enter a line break within the cell, thereby forcing Excel to expand the height of the row. Here’s how to do it:
1. Type the first line into the cell where you want the heading to appear.
2. Press Alt Enter.
3. Continue typing the next line.
4. Repeat 2 and 3 for additional lines.
5. Press the Enter key when finished.
