TLC Tips of the Week:                          from Helen Olberg

This week’s tip applies to Windows XP.

Do you use the Details View in My Computer or Windows Explorer? While showing the contents of a folder or a drive, you can click View>Details to see more information about a file than just its name.

By default you can see each file’s Name, Type, Size, and Date (last) Modified. Clicking a column’s name changes the view again; it sorts the file names by that column. Clicking the column’s name a second time sorts the column in the reverse order. (Very handy to tell which file was the last you worked on.)

Did you realize that you can customize this view for each folder or for all folders on your drives? You can add or remove items to display while in the Details View. How?

1.      Right-click one of the column’s names and check the items you want to display.

2.      To save the view settings for the current folder, click Tools>Folder Options; click the View tab. Under Advanced settings, be sure that Remember each folders view settings is checked.

3.      To save the view settings for all the folders on your computer, click Tools>Folder Options; click the View tab. Under Folder Views click the button Apply to all folders.
