Teddy Bear Drive Every year during the holiday season Psi Beta manages the Teddy Bear Drive which collects new toys to donate to hospitalized children in the Chicago area. This year we received a lot of support from everyone on campus. We delivered the toys to the children at Cook County Hospital and got to see a lot of smiling faces. Thank you, to everyone who donated!

Careers in Psychology Night In January, Psi Beta hosted Careers in Psychology Night where we invited psychologists to speak about their experience in various psychology related fields. Our speakers gave overviews of the academic and career paths they took to get to where they are and highlighted important points for students to consider before entering the field. The majority of the time was then used as a mini counseling session where the floor was opened for students to ask questions. We had a great turnout and everyone had a lot of fun. Special thanks to our speakers: Prof. Hockett, Dr. Agnew, and Dr. Shapiro. Additional thanks to Jackie Clifford, our moderator for the night.

It is a two day event held every year at COD during the first week of March and is hosted by the COD psychology faculty and the Psi Beta chapter. Students and teachers from all over the Midwest come to listen to and participate in various psychology related sessions. Sessions include presentations by experts in psychology, poster presentations, and open discussions. This year's 14th Annual MISTOP was March 2 and 3, 2007. Psi Beta helped put together sessions such as "Stress and Coping: The Students' Perspective" and "Just Ask: Advising Experts Answer Your Questions". Members also participated in the student poster contest were they presented the chapter's progress in and aspirations for the current research project about student stress at COD. Their poster was "The COD Student Stress Study: Community College Students and Stress." (To learn more about this year's research project click here.)

One of the great things about Psi Beta is that members get to conduct research! This year members wanted to study COD student stress. Community college stress sources that relate specifically to the campus environment will be measured and evaluated against those of a traditional college environment. In order to do this, a number of focus groups have been conducted and a survey will then be constructed and and distributed to a random sample of the student population at COD. The results will then be given to the COD administration along with recommendations for modifications as well as additional students programs and services that will help alleviate campus-related stress. Chapter members presented their progress with the study in March at MISTOP. They created a poster for the student poster contest and wrote an accompanying paper documenting their objectives, methods, and progress thus far. For more information on the COD Student Stress Study, including notes from focus groups and the paper, please e-mail Jackie Clifford (clifford.jacqueline.1535@dupage.edu) or Linda Miller (miller.linda.3649@dupage.edu).
In order to become an official member one must have a 3.0 GPA, completed Psychology 1100, filled out the Psi Beta registration form, and paid the $50.00 membership fee. Registration forms can be found on the door to Ada Wainwright's office in IC 3097b. By becoming an official member one can hold a leadership position, officially attach his or her name to research studies entered into competitions, and use their membership title to get into psychology programs at other colleges. If you do not meet the requirements to become an official member that's OK! You can still fully participate in activities, meetings, etc.
This year's chapter now has their very own T-shirts! They are black with teal lettering and feature this year's logo (the picture to the left) on the front and have Psi Beta's main focus points ("scholarship / leadership / research / community service") on the back. To purchase a shirt contact our president, Jackie Clifford at clifford.jacqueline.1535@dupage.edu.
