Learning Objectives

    After reading Chapter 9, you should be able to:

  1. Define global stratification.
  2. Distinguish between social inequality and economic inequality, according to Gunnar Myrdal.
  3. Define the "three worlds" approach and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses.
  4. Describe the levels of development approach to explain global stratification.
  5. Define the GINI coefficient and explain its importance.
  6. Define modern slavery and its impact on global poverty.
  7. Describe and evaluate the three theories of global inequality.
  8. Define the "fourth world".
  9. Evaluate the future prospects of global inequality.
After reading Chapter 10, you should be able to:
  1. Define race and ethnic group, explain why the notion of race is both a myth and has social significance.
  2. Define prejudice and stereotype and describe the main theories of prejudice.
  3. Explain Merton's typology of relationships between prejudice and discrimination.
  4. Define discrimination and distinguish between individual and institutional discrimination.
  5. Define the different modes of race relations: genocide, exclusion, segregation, assimilation, pluralism.
  6. Describe the different conflict theories of race relations.
  7. Compare and contrast the experiences of the different racial and ethnic groups in the United States.

After reading Chapter 11, you should be able to:

  1. Explain the difference between sex and gender.
  2. Define sexism, patriarchy, and their origins.
  3. Describe the process of gender socialization and how the different agents of socialization participate in this process.
  4. Explain the gender bias in education.
  5. Describe the different forms of gender discrimination in the workplace.
  6. Define the "second shift".
  7. Define "feminism" and distinguish between its different forms.

After reading Chapter 12, you should be able to:

  1. Define social importance of age.
  2. Distinguish between chronological and functional age and explain the social significance of each.
  3. Describe the recent trends in aging and life expectancy in the United States.
  4. Compare different societies' views on age and aging.
  5. Describe the process of aging through the life course.
  6. Define and discuss ageism.
  7. Discuss economic and social dimensions of age stratification.
  8. Describe and explain elder abuse.
  9. Describe the 3 different theories of coping with death and dying.
