Street Spanish for Gang Unit Officers

Hours: 16
Tuition: $175

Program Information:

This 16 hour class is aimed at equipping law enforcement officers assigned to (or aspiring to be assigned to) tactical and/or gang units with specific Spanish language skills as they pertain to their respective assignments.  While there will be emphasis on pronunciation and being able to obtain basic information from Spanish-speaking individuals, the main focus of the class will be to teach officers words and phrases that could negatively impact law enforcement interaction with gang members, if undetected.  This will be achieved through class participation and group scenarios where officers will be required to use Spanish being taught in class.   The goal of this class is for tactical/gang unit officers to leave the class and be able to hear, interpret and understand key terms and phrases that are specific to gang investigations.

Topics Include:

  • Gang motives, drugs, money, weapons, theft

  • Cultural differences of Hispanic gangs

  • Common hand signals, symbols, hidden graphics, colors and tattoos

  • Differences in dialect

  • Obtaining basic information

  • Completing contact cards

  • Profanities

  • Common slang used when referring to police

**Cancellations for this class must be received by SLEA 35 days prior to the start of the program in order to avoid being billed!**
