Program Information:
This 16 hour class is aimed at equipping law
enforcement officers assigned to (or aspiring to be assigned to)
tactical and/or gang units with specific Spanish language skills as they
pertain to their respective assignments. While there will be emphasis
on pronunciation and being able to obtain basic information from
Spanish-speaking individuals, the main focus of the class will be to
teach officers words and phrases that could negatively impact law
enforcement interaction with gang members, if undetected. This will be
achieved through class participation and group scenarios where officers
will be required to use Spanish being taught in class. The goal of
this class is for tactical/gang unit officers to leave the class and be
able to hear, interpret and understand key terms and phrases that are
specific to gang investigations.
Topics Include:

Gang motives, drugs, money, weapons, theft

Cultural differences of Hispanic gangs

Common hand signals, symbols, hidden graphics,
colors and tattoos

Differences in dialect
-
Obtaining basic information

Completing contact cards
-
Profanities
-
Common slang used when referring to police
**Cancellations for this class must be received
by SLEA 35 days prior to the start of the program in order to avoid
being billed!**
