This 6-hour seminar developed for
law enforcement executives, command officers and supervisors will cover
agency and personnel exposure to Civil Liability/Risk Management Section
1983 issues and lawsuits. This engaging program is a discussion based
curriculum designed to allow participants to work through scenarios
founded on current law and court decisions
The program will primarily focus on Use of Force issues
and as time permits topics will include:

A history of Section 1983 and how it affects law
enforcement.

A discussion of the differences between a Section
1983 action and a common lawsuit.

A discussion of important 1983 cases and how they
affect police officers and their supervisors.

How can the impact of Section 1983 be mitigated?

What are the situations where officers are the most
vulnerable to Section 1983 actions?

What are the “rules” regarding “force” and “deadly
force” – and how can your officers stay within those rules?
**Cancellations for this class must be received
by SLEA 35 days prior to the start of the program in order to avoid being
