Fire/Arson Investigation Hours: 16 The initial response by law enforcement and fire personnel to the report of a fire is critical in ultimately determining the cause and origin of a fire. Safeguarding and rescuing of victims at fire scenes will always be paramount in public safety however at some point the investigation must begin. This 2-day, 16 hour program will provide both law enforcement and fire department personnel with a fundamental understanding of the scientific method of fire investigation. The curriculum covers processing the fire scene, reading burn patterns, determining origin & cause, flashover and identifying ignitable liquids. This class is suited for beginners as well as the experienced fire investigator. It will also cover consent, consent forms, and warrants. Some practical exercises are included as such students should wear casual clothing. Instructor: Michael C. Deckelmann, Chicago Fire Department, Retired Mike is a second generation firefighter who began his career on March 8, 1962 as a volunteer with the Columbus Manor Fire Department located on the West end of Oak Lawn, IL. In 1964 Mike took the exam for the Chicago Fire Department and waited three years for the job. During those three years he worked as a patrolman and juvenile officer with the Evergreen Park Police Department. Mike retired with 36½ years on the Chicago Fire Department, working some of the busiest companies that the city had to offer and responding to over 3000 alarms a year. On March 8th 2013 he will have completed 51 years in the Fire Service. With the rank of Captain and the title of Senior Supervising Fire Marshal, he was third in command of Chicago’s Office of Fire Investigation.
