Program Information:
Written reports are
foundational documents used by investigators, prosecutors, and attorneys
to make legal decisions. For the officer that writes a report, he/she
could very well have to testify in court to what was written sometimes
months and even years after it was authored. In essence, a written
report is a historical record of an event that took place. Some reports
are organized, well written, and thorough, detailed, and are an asset.
Sadly, others are poorly written, and lack clarity and specificity and
are of nominal value. Written reports, good or bad, are a reflection of
the officer and the agency one works for.
