Death Investigation

Program Information:
This 24-hour hands-on program is designed for law enforcement personnel, coroners or medical examiners who have responsibilities as they relate to death investigations, crime scene evidence identification, collection and preservation. Students participating in this program will learn how to manage a death investigation scene and will be able to apply forensic principles when processing an/or directing the physical processing of a crime scene.

Curriculum Foundation:
The course is built upon a curriculum in keeping with principles laid out by the International Association for Identification (IAI). Its structure will assist those students in obtaining the IAI Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) certification and will also provide the necessary foundation for SLEA’s advanced Crime Scene Technician/Investigator courses.

Topics include:
  • Management of a death scene based on the FBI Evidence Response Team’s Twelve Step Protocol
  • Standard Crime Scene Processing Methods and Documentation
  • Fingerprint recovery operations on the body and trace evidence
  • Forensic Light Sources in DNA Recovery
  • Presumptive Blood Tests and Blood Stain Evidence Interpretation
  • Crime Scene Bullet Trajectory
  • Management of a Death Investigation from the Perspective of an Evidence Technician
  • Crime Scene Narrative Descriptions and Administrative Documentation
  • Forensic Autopsy

    Program Requirements:
    Students attending this program should have a fundamental understanding in the use of their departments’ digital or 35mm camera.

    Students must bring:
    A departmental camera.
    Scientific calculator
    Metric Clear Plastic Ruler
    Magnifier
    Evidence Processing Kit

**Cancellations for this class must be received by SLEA 35 days prior to the start of the program in order to avoid being billed!**
