CONFESSION LAW UPDATE
A DISCUSSION OF CUSTODY, MIRANDA & THE
5TH & 6TH AMENDMENTS

Program Information:
This is a discussion based course designed to allow
officers to work through scenarios based on the current state of the law
surrounding statements and confessions. Officers will be presented
with fact patterns, based on real world scenarios, designed to promote
discussion of the many legal issues surrounding this area of the law.
The course will also include an overview of Juvenile law.
Topics include:

When is a defendant in custody?

When does a statement need to be
recorded?

When can I go back and talk to a
defendant in custody and what can we talk about?

When does a defendant invoke
counsel and/right to silence?

What is an “ambiguous” request
for a lawyer?

Keeping the 5th and 6th
amendments straight.
- The differences between the Juvenile and Adult
justice systems.
**Cancellations for this class must be received
by SLEA 35 days prior to the start of the program in order to avoid being
