Basic Evidence Technician Course

Hours: 40
Tuition: $650.00

Program Information:
This 40-hour hands-on certification program is designed for law enforcement personnel, coroners or medical examiners who have responsibilities as they relate to crime scene evidence identification, collection and preservation.

Instructors:
John L. Larsen, FBI Senior Team Leader (Retired) Chicago Division, Evidence Response Team and Agents from that team who are police certified instructors.

This course is built upon a curriculum in keeping with principles laid out by the International Association for Identification (IAI). Its structure will assist those students in obtaining the IAI Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) certification and will also provide the necessary foundation for SLEA’s advanced Crime Scene Technician/Investigator courses: Bloodstain Evidence, Bullet Trajectory Reconstruction and Death Investigation programs.

Topics include:

  • Preliminary Approach and Survey
  • Crime Scene Security, Management and Administration
  • Sketching/Diagrams
  • Basic Crime Scene Photography
  • Casting
  • Lifting and preserving Impressions
  • Use of Electrostatic Dust Lifters
  • Fuming in lab and field
  • Hair and Fiber Evidence Collection
  • Recovery of DNA Evidence
  • Fingerprint and pattern Recognition/Major Case Fingerprints
  • Latent Recovery Techniques

Students must bring:
Their departments 35mm or digital camera, flash and tripod
Evidence kit
Appropriate Evidence Processing Clothing
Department forms for recording of evidence

**Cancellations for this class must be received by SLEA 35 days prior to the start of the program in order to avoid being billed!**
