Street Interview Skills for Patrol Officers

Program Information:

What is the truth;what is a lie? Whether they realize it or not, patrol officers conduct interviews as part of their everyday patrol function. Pro-active officers attempt to solicit information during encounters that is generally not in the best interest of the subject being detained or questioned. Many times a successful street interview can be the key to making and arrest, acontraband seizure, or identifying criminal behavior. Interview-skilled patrol officers can often assist an investigation divisions with information they obtain at the street level.

This course was designed to help patrol officers learn to ask the right questions, and recognize truthfulness and deceit during street encounters. Officers will learn how their own behavior and perceptions can as stumbling blocks,hindering a successful street interview.

Attending officers will:

  • Gain an understanding of Neuro-linguistics and Neuro-linquistic Programming (NLP)

  • Learn to recognize patterns of Kinesics behavior during consenual and temporary detention situations

  • Learn to identify and group behavioral clusters as indicators of truthful or deceitful answers

  • Understand what control and choice questionsar and learn how to use them to expand the scope of traffic stops and Terry encounters
