Police Applicant Background Investigation

Program Information:
The interest of serving our communities with the most qualified of police applicants is paramount to a professional law enforcement agency's success. The process of hiring reliable, trustworthy employees who are of good moral character is one the most important fundamental tasks in the selection of personnel. It is a practice that compels police departments to exercise reasonable care to ensure that they do not engage in negligent appointment/hiring practices and one that is legally defensible. This 8-hour program will prepare students to conduct thorough background investigations that are credible.

  • Sources of information/Investigative techniques
  • Americans with Disabilities Act and Personnel Review Act/ Medical information & HIPAA
  • Fair Credit Reporting standards
  • Exploring an applicant’s military history
  • Policy Development & CALEA standards
  • State and Federal (NCIC & LEADS) policies
  • On-line data bases/social networking sites
  • Polygraph questions/usage & Psychological & behavioral testing
  • Pre-interview procedures/Interviewing techniques
  • Writing the final report & recommendation criteria
