How Code Enforcement Can Help Police Operations

Hours: 8
Tuition: $95

Program Information:

This 8-hour program designed for Administrators and Command Staff will examine the relationship between crime reduction and aggressive code enforcement, an essential component of any crime free housing program.  It will be taught by former DuPage County Assistant State’s Attorney and current municipal prosecutor, Linda S. Pieczynski, the author of Illinois Criminal Practice and Procedure 2d, Roll Call News, a newsletter for law enforcement officers, and numerous books on code enforcement and an instructor for the International Code Council.

Because of the foreclosure crisis, more properties are likely to become blighted and abandoned.  She will explore how a multidisciplinary approach that includes the police and building code departments works best to improve neighborhoods.  Sharing information, providing services for each other, forcing landowners to fix up property, and enforcing rental inspection ordinances leads to decreasing crime rates as the quality of life improves in a community.  Program participants will be provided with the latest information on cases and statutes that they need to know to perform their duties legally and avoid liability.

Topics Include:

  • Methods of Enforcement
  • Condemn Drug Houses
  • Administrative search warrants
  • Joint efforts between the police and code departments
  • Rental inspection programs
  • Multi-family housing crime reduction
  • Understanding property maintenance codes
  • Legal ways to evict tenants who commit crimes
  • Legal ways to enter residences
  • Learn techniques for dealing with overcrowding

**Cancellations for this class must be received by SLEA 35 days prior to the start of the program in order to avoid being billed!**
