Description of Organization:
JA is a nationwide nonprofit organization that presents important life skills through hands-on economic education lessons. Volunteers are placed with students directly in the classroom during the school day. JA’s purpose is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business and economics to improve the quality of their lives.
Description of Service Learner Role:
JA’s hands-on; age appropriate programs stress the relevance of school success later in life. In other words, JA brings economics to life. In the Elementary School Programs, students begin to see their place in the world as individuals, workers and consumers. The Middle Grades Program promotes three central themes: the economics of households, business and the world marketplace. The High School Program focuses on workforce readiness, helping prepare young people for their future roles in society.
Volunteers make five classroom visits at the elementary school level and six to eight visits at the middle and high school levels. Classroom visits range between 30-45 minutes depending on grade level and are made during the school day, and scheduling is flexible. Volunteers get to pick their preferred school location and grade level, and also determine their visit schedule with their teacher.
Volunteering with JA provides a unique opportunity to gain teaching experience in the classroom, polish communication and presentation skills, learn more about the American business system, and most importantly, make a difference in children’s lives.
Organization Requirements:
Your life experiences in the home or in the workplace qualify you to help guide young people in developing critical life skills. JA provides complete training, including step-by-step lessons to follow to guide you in the classroom. Teachers remain in the classroom while the volunteer is there and JA staff provides continuing support. Volunteers need to complete a one-hour volunteer registration and orientation session. Volunteers need to be reliable and conduct their classroom visits as scheduled.
