Description of Organization:
The Hanson Center's therapeutic horsemanship program specialized in serving persons with disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs. The program offers beginning and intermediate English and Western riding lessons for children and adults, beginning at age three.
Lessons are offered year-round in six week sessions, Monday through Saturday. Lessons are conducted in the Center's five-year old heated indoor arena, "Marcia's Place."
Therapeutic riding is proven to have many benefits for people with disabilities including those who use wheelchairs, persons who are visually impaired and blind and individuals with mental retardation and learning disabilities. Benefits of therapeutic riding include improved coordination and muscle tone, improved respiratory system, stretching of contracted muscles and bones, and increased self-confidence.
Description of Service Learner Role:
To help prepare horses for lessons and assist instructor with students during lessons.
