Description of Organization:
Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana serves girls ages 5-17 in the metropolitan Chicago area, suburbs and northwest Indiana.  Our current membership is more than 94,000 girls and 24,000 adults.  In the Lisle Regional Service Center area we typically serve 20,000 Girl Scouts and 1500 adults each year.  Girl Scouts is about leadership; our mission is, “Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.”  To fulfill our mission we engage girls in informal educational activities to build their leadership skills and self esteem.  Girls belong to troops as they have for years, but girls also travel the world, create dynamic community service projects, assist with community needs and sell cookies!

Description of Service Learner Role:

We have a variety of roles for service learners:  students can work in the office to develop their office skills; students can work at camp doing camp upkeep and environmental preservation; students can hone their communication skills doing presentations for adult Girl Scouts; students can manage and organize a cookie sale delivery site, and students can work directly with girls delivering fun activities.

Organization Requirements:
Students need to have high energy, a desire to make a difference and a preference for working either with girls or in the out-of-doors.
Students choosing to work with Girl Scouts will do an online orientation to the national Girl Scout organization, as well as a face-to-face orientation about their specific role, (about 3hours total).  Volunteers for Girl Scouts must apply, submit references, consent to a background check and finally, register with the Girl Scouts (annual membership fee is $12.00 which includes insurance to cover any Girl Scout related activities).
