Description of Organization:
In April of 2003, students from Honors Seminar "Seed, Soil, and the Soul" broke ground for the COD Honors/Community Garden. The project, a 10,000 square foot urban farm at COD, has a mission of providing fresh organic produce to food pantry clients at the People's Resource Center (PRC), a well-respected comprehensive social service agency addressing the needs of low-income people in DuPage County. During our growing season, we deliver fresh produce to the PRC at least once a week, and often twice. The garden, a service learning site at COD, is managed by students, and has also benefited from community volunteers from various walks of life.
The Garden serves as a venue to positively involve students in issues related to food, agriculture, poverty and hunger. This service learning opportunity gives students a chance to learn by doing and provides them with a positive way to deal with what can be rather depressing topics.
Description of Service Learner Role:
Service learners participate in a variety of tasks from preparing the soil, growing seedlings and planting, to maintaining the garden and harvesting produce throughout the season. Students also participate in delivering produce to the PRC and working in the Food Market with PRC clients and volunteers.
There may also be work for students in designing a variety of promotional materials for the Garden.
Organization Requirements:
Must be willing to engage in physical work outdoors in the heat or cold, and get their hands dirty.
