How is a certificate different from a degree?

A certificate focuses on a specific body or area of knowledge while a degree combines that focus with a broad academic background.

What is the difference between an Associate of Arts (A.A.) and an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) Degree?

An A.A. degree in our area is usually geared to transfer to a four-year university in a residential, full-time program. The A.A.S. degree is accepted by many local colleges and universities, especially adult, part-time programs.The A.A. includes more liberal arts courses, while the A.A.S. focuses more on your specialty area.

What is IAI?

IAI is the acronym for the Illinois Articulation Iniative. A course which is designated IAI will transfer to any public or private college or university in Illinois.

What are prerequisites?

Prerequisites are courses (or demonstrated equivalent experience) which one must take prior to enrolling in another higher level course.

Why should I take a prerequisite?

The prerequisite course should give you the background necessary for the higher level course. The higher level course instructor assumes that you have mastered the content of the prerequisite course.

Generally, mastery of the content of a prerequisite course should improve your chances of successful performance in the higher level course.

Is every course offered every term?

No, but many courses are.

Basic courses such as:

are offered every term. These courses are also offered in day, evening and weekend sessions. Many are also offered in the Business Simulation, through the Center for Independent Learning, the Online College and Evening Degree Program.

What is the Business Simulation?

The Business Simulation is a course delivery system which stresses team work, goal orientation and task completion. This class method is most similar to the situations you will encounter in the work world.

The Business Simulation at College of DuPage also incorporates the use of various computer software in goal attainment and task completion, thus mirroring a work situation most accurately.

What is the Center for Independent Learning (CIL)?

The Center for Independent Learning offers a variety of course delivery systems. Some are delivered via audio tape or video tape; some require individual appointments with the instructor.

CIL courses combine the advantages of independent learning with the support of a structured series of assignments, instructors available in person and/or by phone or e-mail to help you. Telecourses or audio courses provide additional resources to enhance your learning experience.

What is the Online College?

The Online College offered independent and individual learning opportunities via the Internet.

Courses combine the advantages of independent learning with the support of a structured series of assignments, chat rooms and instructors available by telephone or e-mail.

The Supervision Certificate and Consumer Marketing Certificate are also attainable through Online courses.

What is the Evening Degree Program?

The Evening Degree Program consists of courses needed to complete the Associates Degree in Management offered in a compressed time-table. Most courses are offered in eight(8) weeks with two coures per term.

What is Cooperative Education?

Students who qualify for a Co-op experience meet with a Co-op Faculty Advisor to determine if a current or potential position offers an appropriate level responsibilities to qualify as a Co-op position.

The Co-op Faculty Advisor and the student then use Management modules (one per Co-op credit hour) and/or specially designed projects that meld with the work experience to generate a tailor-made learning experience for the student.

No Co-op hours may be used towards the A.A.S in Marketing.
No Co-op hours may be used towards the A.A.S in Marketing
No Co-op hours may be used towards any of the Management or Marketing Certificates.

How do I apply quarter hours to my degree or certificate?

Students who earned quarter hours may use a conversion spreadsheet linked from each of our degree/certificate pages. Click Degrees and Certificates using this link or from the home page.

Choose the relevant degree or certificate and scroll to the bottom. You will see a link to open a spread sheet to check your progress and one for quarter conversion. Click the quarter conversion link to download and use the spreadsheet(s).
