Executive Summary
Report Objective:
Provide student demographics based on Fall Quarter 1997 enrollment in order to:
- Provide the college staff with the information necessary to answer the frequently asked questions about the student body.
- Provide information for the college decision makers in order to anticipate student needs and expectations.
Highlights:
- College of DuPage began in 1967 with 2,619 students. That number has climbed over the years to the Fall Quarter 1997 student population of 33,490.
- Total headcount decreased 2.6% over the previous Fall Quarter, credit headcount decreased 2.4%, and non-credit headcount decreased 4.1%.
- The college's changing enrollment has been consistent with other community colleges in Illinois. The average percent-of-change in credit headcount for all community colleges in Illinois for Fall Quarter 1997 decreased by 3.7%, while C.O.D.'s decreased 2.4%.
- The majority of C.O.D. students are part time--25,111 (75%). There are 8,379 (25%) full-time students.
- One fourth of the students are in the traditional age category of 18-20 years of age, 42% are in the adult age category of 21-39 years of age, and 29% are 40 years of age or older. The remaining 4% are 17 years or less.
- The average (mean) age of the students is 33 years. This differs substantially from the median which is 27 years and the mode which is 19 years.
- The minority proportion at the college has dramatically increased over the past decade. In 1987 the minority proportion was 11 percent compared to Fall Quarter 1997 with a 20% proportion of minorities.
- Slightly over 9,000 C.O.D. students indicate they plan to graduate from the college, and just over 10,500 students indicate they plan to transfer to a four-year institution.
- The top five occupational programs by declared major are: 1) Nursing ADN; 2) Computing Information Systems; 3) Graphic Arts; 4) Travel/Tourism; and 5) Accounting.
- Over 7,000 (21%) students have already earned an Associate's or higher degree. Over 200 have a Doctorate; 1,500 have a Master's Degree; 4,300 have a Bachelor's Degree; and over 1,000 have an Associate's Degree.
