The Library Mission Statement

Every library needs to determine its mission. This is the statement that identifies the values and purpose of the library. The mission statement is a statement of what the library aspires to be. It is a concise synthesis of the service goals and philosophy of service.

The statement should be very brief, and finely honed to include the library's vision of its role in the community. It should be an honest and accurate mirror of the library's intentions for service to its community.
Does your mission statement:

The freedom to know is the foundation of democracy. The mission of the Library, a basic municipal service, is to be an information center for the community in order to preserve and encourage the free expression of ideas essential to an informed citizenry.

The mission statement of the Library is to provide not only the best library services, material, staff, and cost-efficient facility but to aggressively market and promote our extensive reference collection, our adult and children's collections and provide a diverse, educational, cultural, and recreational resource through a variety of media to our community's changing age and demographic patterns, limited only by available funding and other resources supplied by residents and community organizations.

The mission of the Library is to serve as a cathedral of human knowledge- an accessible database of knowledge that serves as the community's
memory-and as an information and knowledge safety net, while providing materials, programs, and services to the people of the community.
