COURSE DESCRIPTION
Basic course in which students learn to apply reading process to interpret what is read at a higher level of abstraction. Students learn to make generalizations, draw conclusions, and follow a sequence of events; to become aware of how emotional reactions affect comprehension; to evaluate critically what is read and to analyze a variety of textual material for its quality, accuracy, and truthfulness; and to apply what is read to real-life situations. Course may be taken two times for credit.

The American Heritage Dictionary , 4 th edition in paperback. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2001(or approved equivalent).
Learning Journal: a multi-section, divided spiral notebook.
Additional materials will be available in the Centers for Independent Learning as assigned.
ORIENTATION/ATTENDANCE
Attendance required at weekly appointment.
EVALUATION OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE
Students will be evaluated on the basis of completion of exercises and activities. Students will also be evaluated based on progress and mastery tests, as well as teacher observation of student performance and participation. Students may also be required to visit the Reading Assistance Area as a part of this course.
