COURSE DESCRIPTION
A reading fundamentals course in which students who have beginning reading
skills learn to recognize and pronounce words through recognizing their
structure: roots, affixes, and compounds. Students learn basic syllabic
patterns and how to apply the patterns to decode words; how to use graphic,
verbal, and visual contextual clues to aid in decoding words; and how to use
phonics principles and information in the dictionary to pronounce words.
Practice includes reading individual words as well as reading words in
sustained text, using a multi-sensory approach.

sources.
Additional materials will be available in the Centers for Independent Learning
as assigned.
ORIENTATION/ATTENDANCE
Attendance required at weekly appointment.
EVALUATION OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE
Students will be evaluated on the basis of completion of exercises and
activities. Students will also be evaluated based on progress and mastery
tests, as well as teacher observation of student performance and participation.
Students may also be required to visit the Reading Assistance Area as a part of
this course.
