ORIENTATION AND DEADLINE DATES

This is an information sheet only, not the course syllabus. All students must see a math instructor for an orientation.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

3 credit hours
Applications of mathematics to business transactions. Analysis and solution of the business problems in profit and loss, interest, installment transactions, percent discounts, taxes and payroll. Prerequisite: Mathematics 0460 (or college equivalent) with a grade of “C” or better or a qualifying score on the mathematics placement test

 

COURSE MATERIALS:

1.      From COD home page, click on myACCESS.

2.      Click on Search for Credit Classes.

3.      From the Term drop-down box select the term.

4.      Choose your course from the Subjects drop-down menu.

5.      In the Course # field, enter your course number.

6.      In the Section field, enter the course section number if known.

7.      From the Course Types drop-down menu select Flexible Learning.

8.      Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on SUBMIT.

9.      Click on the Section Name and Title link.

10.  Click on Click here for prices of required textbook(s) and supplies and course material information will be displayed.

Required Calculator:  Scientific calculator, non-programmable, non-graphing (PROGRAMMABLE AND GRAPHING

                                CALCULATORS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED).


Optional: MyMathLab website provides additional practice problems, tutorials, student solution manual, and online videos. Student access code is packaged with new text or can be purchased online.

COURSE OUTLINE:

 

Unit 1:         Basic Mathematics

                   Unit 1 includes Chapter 1, Chapter 2, and Chapter 3

                   Test 1-- No calculators

 

Unit 2:         Payroll and Taxes

                   Unit 2 includes Chapter 6 (omit Section 6.6) and Chapter 7

                   Test 2:  Non-graphing calculators are permitted

                               Math tables will be provided

 

Unit 3:         Mathematics of Retailing

                   Unit 3 includes Chapter 9, Chapter 10, and Chapter 11 (Section 11.1 only)

                   Test 3:  Non-graphing calculators are permitted

                               Math tables will be provided

 

Unit 4:         Simple Interest, Simple Interest Notes, and Bank Discount

                   Unit 4 includes Chapter 12 and Chapter 13 (13.1, 13.2, and 13.3)

                   Test 4:  Non-graphing calculators are permitted

                               Math tables will be provided

 

Unit 5:         Compound Interest, Annuities and Sinking Funds, Business and Consumer Loans

                    Unit 5 includes Chapter 14 (14.1, 14.2, and 14.4) Chapter 15, and Chapter 16 (16.1, 16.2, and 16.4)

                   Test 5:  Non-graphing calculators are permitted

                               Math tables will be provided

 

Time:

 

A commitment to study and the time (6-10 hours per week) to complete the assigned work is required.
