COURSE DESCRIPTION
The second of two developmental writing courses designed to prepare students for English Composition 1101, English 0493 focuses on composing longer (500-word) essays and on further developing critical thinking skills. May be taken twice for credit.
COURSE MATERIALS
Mangelsdorf, Kate and Evelyn Posey. Choices: A Basic Writing Guide with Readings, 3 rd Edition. New York: Bedford/St. Martin's, 2003. This book should be packaged with access to the accompanying Comment web site.
A 3-ring binder with dividers in which to keep pre-writing activities, 1 st drafts, and final drafts; SQ3R responses; Workshop Questions; Self-Analyses; and Editing Logs for each essay assignment; as well as the completed forms from the Writing Assistance Area..
Pocket or desktop dictionary.
Additional materials will be available in the Centers for Independent Learning as assigned.
ORIENTATION/ATTENDANCE
Attendance required at weekly appointment.
EVALUATION OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE
Students will complete weekly assignments, including readings, exercises, and writing activities. Students will take midterm assessment test in the Assessment and Testing Lab and will complete the English 1101 placement exam at the end of the term. Students may be required to visit the Writing Assistance Area three times during the term for extra assistance.
