Elementary Spanish

sun burst

Bienvenido a Español 1102 en el Internet.

Welcome to the Internet version of Spanish 1102, Elementary Spanish II. This is a four credit hour course and the second of a two-semester sequence.

¿Habla Ud. Español?

Do you speak Spanish? If your answer is yes, un poquito, you've come to the right place. You are probably a person who wants to learn more Spanish in order to

  • understand and speak to family, friends, customers or co-workers and/or
  • travel to or work in a Spanish speaking country and/or
  • satisfy requirements for a degree.

This course was developed to continue the study of Spanish language and culture. It was designed for students who have completed Spanish 1101 or the equivalent, but can also be beneficial for those who may have studied Spanish some time ago and who would like to brush up. If you cannot commit to a regular classroom course due to location, work schedule or other circumstances, this may be an option for you.

Course Objectives

The development of communication skills is the main objective of this course. Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate the understanding and use of the Spanish sound system in both oral and written form.
  • understand and participate in dialogs on topics such as foods, celebrations, household chores, city life, health and well-being, nature and the environment and modern technology.
  • understand and use the fundamental structures of the Spanish language including :
    • verb constructions including the preterite and imperfect, present and past perfect, future, as well as formal and informal commands and the present subjunctive mood.
    • por and para, reciprocal reflexives, double object pronouns, stressed possessives, comparisons and superlatives, and the relative pronouns - que, lo que and quien.
  • employ strategies needed to read material written in Spanish such as newspaper and/or magazine articles and ads, websites and simple literature.
  • understand simple spoken Spanish.

How does this course differ from classroom language learning?

This course integrates an online textbook (E-Text), online workbook (Web-SAM), and online assignments in order to provide you with ample opportunities to hear and produce the Spanish sound system and to acquire a basic vocabulary and understanding of the rudiments of grammar. You can proceed at your own pace, practicing as much as you need to in the privacy and convenience of your home. All assignments are done on the computer and e-mailed to your instructor. In addition, you are expected to participate in simple conversations with your instructor in Spanish via telephone. There is no need to come to campus.

How much time will I need to devote to the course?

Although this type of learning provides the maximum flexibility, it is by no means a short cut to acquiring the language. True language learning takes ample and frequent practice. Although estimates are difficult due to the complex nature of language acquisition, most successful students need at least 8 to I0 hours a week to work with the materials and do the assignments.

Am I a good candidate for independent study?

Independent study takes discipline and dedication. You are responsible for pacing your work throughout the semester, and need to be aware of important dates and deadlines. The most successful flexible learning students adhere to the prescribed schedule provided by the instructor and follow it faithfully. If you have never taken an independent study course before, please visit Succeeding in Internet Courses.

What computer equipment, software and skills do I need for this course?

Due to the nature of language learning, this course is more technologically complex than most other online courses. In addition to having a good, reliable internet connection, your computer must be equipped with a sound card, speakers and a microphone. You must also be capable of sending and receiving e-mail attachments. All software and websites required for the course are included with the purchase of your course materials.

The following identifies the minimum requirements that your equipment must meet in order to utilize all the features and materials provided in this course. Specific information for the technical requirements and technical support can be found on the publisher's website.

If you don't have a browser, the Shockwave, or the RealPlayer, software recommended above then click on the appropriate links below to download the free software. Instructions will be provided or are available on how to perform the installations.

Technical requirements for Blackboard are similar to those given in the above links. See Hardware and Software Recommendations under Blackboard Help at (http://www.cod.edu/it/blackboard/require.htm)

How do I register?

You may enroll in-person at the Registration Office in SRC 2048 on the COD campus. What if I have other questions?

Many more general and course-specific questions can be answered on C.O.D. Online under Course Offerings by Term and Course Information. Although this is an independent learning course, you will not be completing it alone. I am available both online and by phone to help you with any questions about either the subject matter or course requirements. Likewise, technological assistance is provided online or by phone. Once enrolled, you may also want to ask your fellow students for advice via the electronic discussion board.

I look forward to helping you learn to communicate in Spanish and to explore the Hispanic world. ¡Buena suerte! Good luck!
