Sociology 2220
Sexual Relationships, Marriage, and Family
(IAI S7 901)
Course Description:
This is a three hour course with no pre-requisites. In this course we use a
cross-societal focus to study sex roles, dating, mate selection and sexuality.
We explore traditional and emerging marriage, family and child-rearing patterns
from a global perspective. Marital dynamics, including expressiveness, marital
power, conflict, family violence, divorce, and the later years of marriage are
also featured.
Course Structure:
This course is divided into five units. Students read a compelling
sociology textbook that brings a global perspective on the family, as well as an
additional special-topic book. For each unit, students complete online
exams, write film analysis essays, complete active learning assignments, and do
statistical exercises that highlight family trends.
