PRINCIPLES OF ADVERTISING
MARKETING 2240: Your Polaroid Ad Image Graphic

WHY SHOULD I TAKE THIS COURSE?

Because it is a fun, non-traditional way to study advertising at the College of DuPage! The best way to learn advertising is to experience it. Students in this course will do so by completing innovative assignments that allow them to wear each of the different "hats" of the advertising profession. For example, students will be asked to write an advertising strategy for a fictional product of their choosing (account executive hat) and develop some ads for that product (art director hat). They will also write a media plan (media director hat) and complete a research assignment (account planner hat). In total there will be 10 assignments in which students apply the textbook material through real world applications. The result is that students truly understand all of the various elements of advertising and know which ones they like or don't like. This knowledge will hopefully provide direction to students in terms of career selection or additional courses for further study. Finally, this course will help you either meet the Marketing Certificate requirements or will serve as credit towards an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree.

DO I HAVE TO BE CREATIVE TO DO WELL IN THIS COURSE?

You need not be a graphic designer, advertising aficionado or artist to do well in this course. While you will be asked to develop 5 creative pieces (e.g., print ad, brochure, etc.). My assessment (grading) of your work will be based on how well your ads match your advertising strategy. In other words, the graphics might be basic, but the key is that the color, tone and message are on strategy. Additionally you will also have 5 assignments that are not creative in nature (e.g., a media plan, research assignment, etc.) and 5 exams. What you do need to be to do well in this course is to be disciplined and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. If you fall behind, you will have trouble completing the course due to the amount of time required for each assignment. The decision is up to you. What do you think? Enroll now!
