The transition from fire fighter to company officer is perhaps the most important and potentially the most difficult change in your fire service career. Fire Leadership III is a continuation of Fire Science 2252 and will include analyzing and organizing personnel assignments, developing personnel policies, preparing capital budgets and fiscal financing, developing public relations programs, and developing management systems for the fire service.
Admission is open to anyone who is a high school graduate, or has earned a GED, or is at least 18 years old, but students wanting to take this course should be enrolled in Fire Science classes.
Prerequisites: Fire Leadership II or consent of the instructor.
Fire Leadership III meets or exceeds the requirements for certification by the Illinois State Fire Marshal, Office of Personnel Standards and Education and the National Fire Protection Association Standard 1021, Fire Officer Professional Qualifications leading to certification as a Fire Officer II. To be certified as a Fire Officer II in the State of Illinois you must be on a fire department, be a certified Fire Fighter II, and pass all of the classes for Fire Officer II certification as specified by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office. If you do not live in Illinois, check with the local authority having jurisdiction, in your state, about the state requirements for certification.
This course is delivered on line. Computer knowledge, access to a computer, having an internet service provider (such as AOL, MSN, etc), and knowing how to operate a computer are necessary to access this course and perform web searches. Communications will be asynchronous and interacting with your fellow students will greatly enhance your learning experience. Students taking this course will have diverse knowledge and ideas should be shared. Course content will be broken into units and assignments will be due at the end of each unit. A schedule will be supplied when the student signs on line to the course.
Students meeting the requirements can enroll by calling the College of DuPage at 630.942.2377 or register online using myACCESS. Click "How to use myACCESS" and follow the instructions. It is suggested that students access each area in COD Online, prior to registration, to see if online learning is for them.
