English 1152: Poetry enables students to discover the literary form that people turn to when they are looking for the perfect way to express themselves. Students read a wide range of poems and listen to podcasts of professors (and a student) discussing the elements that make a poem a success. Guest poets read and discuss their work; these include the former Poet Laurette of the United States, Howard Nemerov; well-published poet Edward Hirsch; Angela Jackson, whose poetry reflects the legacy of her African-American experience; and Illinois Poet Laurette, Kevin Stein.
Students are encouraged to experience a poem from the personal as well as intellectual level.
This course opens the door to the wonderful world of poetry and enables the student to understand the elements that make a poem a success. This is also a good foundation course for the student who wishes to be a creative writer.
