windmill next to nuclear power plantEnvironmental Law deals with important concepts affecting the way we live on a most fundamental level – the air we breathe, the water we drink, the earth on which we walk, and on which we build our homes, offices, manufacturing plants, roads, and bridges.  Did you know that it also deals with LUST and wild things?  Of course, by that we mean “Leaking Underground Storage Tanks” and endangered and threatened species – but you knew that already, right?

Whether you are planning on devoting your life to protecting the environment, just want to become more informed about laws concerning the environment, or plan on working for a manufacturing company that is subject to environmental regulations, or an entity buys, sells, or leases real estate, this course is for you. You will learn about the major federal environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, laws concerning the disposal of hazardous substances, and laws concerning the protection of endangered species and their habitats.  You will also learn about environmental regulation on the state and local level.  You will practice a lot of independent research in a variety of sources and learn about dealing with the various agencies that are involved in environmental law issues.  In addition, you will learn about ethical issues unique to environmental law and about jobs that require knowledge of the major environmental statutes.

As an elective in the paralegal studies program, this course helps you focus on a practice area that impacts various other legal areas, including real estate, corporate law, tort law, civil and criminal litigation, and administrative agency law.   It will expand your knowledge of and skills in research in a highly regulated and litigated field.  As our country becomes more focused on “green” technology, it will enlighten you as to what steps have been taken to help protect the environment, and what remains to be done.
