LTA 2200: Serving the Public in Today's Libraries

LTA 2200: Serving the Public in Today's Libraries explores the role of the LTA in serving the public including programming, creating displays, basic circulation desk duties, shelf maintenance, interlibrary loan activities, registering and effective interaction with patrons. Automated and online systems are emphasized.

Prerequisite: Library Technology 1101 Introduction to Libraries and the Information Age

Questions you will explore in this course:

star What are Public Services and what is their goal?
star How do we evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of automated library systems?
star What is the philosophy behind the protection of patron privacy and confidentiality?
star What new or modified services should be provided in your community and how should you plan and publicize new services?
star What are the different types of services provided to children and young adults such as story hours and booktalks?
star How can you help ensure that your library is providing satisfactory services to everyone in your community?

Course Expectations:

star LTA 2200 Online is an interactive course that includes discussions, assignments, and projects. This is not an independent self-paced course, but has deadlines for assignments and projects. Some assignments require you to visit a local library and record your observations. One assignment asks you to prepare to deliver a booktalk or storytelling. This course does not meet on campus.
star Students likely to succeed in this course tend to be highly responsible, self-motivated, and self-disciplined. Students should be capable of completing the assignments even when the instructor is not there to remind them of the due dates.

Technical Requirements:

star Minimum of a 28.8 modem. A 56K modem is recommended.
star Internet connection from an Internet provider.
star Windows PC computer with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 (or later) browser. Macintosh computers and browsers are not supported.
