Fashion Studies 1151: Principles of Textiles

Fashion 1151: Principles of Textiles covers the elements of a textile fabric and allows the learner to make good decision whether they are purchasing or designing a garment.  Students will review properties of natural and manufactured fibers, and learn to recognize fiber choices for ease of care, wrinkle resistance, comfort, durability and absorbency.  The course progresses into fabric manufacturing with identifying yarn types, weaves, pile and knit fabric construction and fashion names.  Dye, print and finishing methods are evaluated for cost and stability. Current textile labeling laws are reviewed.  Your sourcebook for the class includes fabric swatches for identification and comparison and a set of cd roms to use as your textbook.  The student will complete a series of lab and review assignment for evaluation.  This is a required course for all AAS Fashion Studies majors.
