English 1101: Composition 1

English 1101 is the first course of the two-course composition sequence offered at College of DuPage. This course will develop your analytical reading and writing so that you are successful at the kinds of writing expected in academic and professional communities.

Prerequisites

Prior to enrollment, student must have a satisfactory score on the English Composition and Reading Competency placement tests. For more information view Placement Testing at the Testing Center website.

Learning Objectives

Apply a process approach to writing.
Develop and support a thesis.
Apply strategies for organizing texts.
Analyze and respond critically and creatively to the ideas and strategies in the writing of others through reading a variety of texts, including academic discourse.
Construct effective prose.
Develop a writing process to include other writers' discourse.
Use methods of research and citation at an introductory level.

Structure of the course

There are five units in this class. The first unit contains some introductory exercises, and four units will ask you to create scenarios, which will lead to a writing assignment. Each of these four units will provide a variety of exercises to help you focus your topic, devise an organization plan, engage in peer review, and revise your essay so that it is as effective as possible.
