English 1101: Composition I

This course is designed to serve as an introduction to the kind of writing expected of students within an academic community. Students will work with many skills in order to develop and enhance their abilities. Throughout this course, it is important to note that the writing process takes commitment, concentration, and determination.

General Course Objectives

  1. Apply a process approach to writing.
  2. Develop and support a thesis.
  3. Apply strategies for organizing texts.
  4. Analyze and respond critically and creatively to the ideas and strategies in the writing of others through reading a variety of texts, including academic discourse.
  5. Construct effective prose.
  6. Develop a writing process to include other writers' discourse.
  7. Use methods of research and citation at an introductory level.

English 1101 (3-credit hours) is the first of two courses in the composition sequence.

Course Guidelines

  1. Complete all weekly reading and writing assignments indicated in the syllabus in order to receive credit for the course. The minimum writing requirement for English 1101 is six assignments; however, some course plans may require additional writing assignments of varying lengths.
  2. Students must be prepared to follow instructions carefully, to be responsible for assigned work, and to meet the expectations and requirements of the course.
  3. A course time commitment of 7-10 hours weekly in addition to Internet familiarity; technical troubleshooting may be necessary.
  4. Students are required to take personal responsibility in composing, revising, editing, and protecting all assignments.
