Fire Science 2251:
Fire Leadership I Online

The transition from fire fighter to company officer is perhaps the most important and potentially the most difficult change in your entire fire service career. This course, Fire Leadership I, will help you advance in achieving that goal.

Who can enroll in the course?

Admission is open to anyone who is a high school graduate, or has earned a GED, and is at least 18 years old, but students wanting to take this course should be enrolled in Fire Science classes. Fire Science 1100 (Introduction to Fire Science) or Fire Science 1103 (Fighter II), or consent of the instructor are prerequisites.

Are there National and State Certifications?

Fire Management I meets or exceeds the requirements for certification by the Illinois State Fire Marshal, Office of Personnel Standards and Education and the National Fire Protection Association Standard 1021, Fire Officer Professional Qualifications leading to certification as a Fire Officer I. To be certified as a Fire Officer I in the State of Illinois you must be on a fire department, be a certified Fire Fighter II, and pass all of the classes for Fire Officer I certification as specified by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office. If you do not live in Illinois, check with the local authority having jurisdiction, in your state, about the state requirements for certification.

Structure of the course

This course is delivered totally online. Computer knowledge, access to a computer, having an Internet service provider (such as AOL, MSN, etc.), and knowing how to operate a computer are necessary to access this course and perform web searches. Course content is broken into units and assignments will be due at the end of each unit. A schedule will be supplied when the student signs online to the course. Because students taking this course have diverse knowledge, all participants are encouraged to regularly share their ideas and experiences.
