Distance Education: The future of Education?

In this course we will discuss numerous educational concepts. We will focus on the major differences between distance and traditional Education. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Distance / Online Education? As an educator you need to be aware of teaching online and that it is growing at an amazing rate. We will focus on answering the following questions:

Course Description

The course provides distance education and an online learning experience from a student and faculty perspective, including learning management systems, principles and theories of online education, and key and best practices for a successful distance education course. (3 credit hours)

Structure of the course

This course is delivered totally online. A student must have access to a computer having an Internet service provider (such as AT&T, Comcast, etc.) and basic knowledge as to how to operate a computer. Course content is broken into units and assignments will be due at the end of each unit. A specific course schedule with unit content and due dates will be supplied when the student signs online to the course. Students are encouraged to share their ideas, suggestions, knowledge, expertise, and questions.


Online courses are not for everyone. Students should be able to work independently and meet deadlines. Some students mistakenly believe online courses are less work, which is not true. Prior to registration, it is strongly suggested that all students access each area in COD Online to see if online learning is suitable for them. Students meeting the requirements can enroll using myACCESS.
