LOW VISION
Wednesday, Feb. 6
Building K, West Commons

Millions of Americans lose some portion of their vision every year, making everyday tasks more difficult. By making better use of your remaining vision, you can regain the confidence, freedom and independence to navigate through everyday tasks such as reading the mail, shopping, cooking, writing checks and watching TV.

Our speakers are doctors Lisa G. Wohl and J. Jenna Lee. Dr. Wohl is the medical staff president at Glen Oaks Hospital. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Illinois Association of Ophthalmology and Women in Ophthalmology. Dr. Lee received her Doctorate of Optometry in 2006 from the Illinois College of Optometry. She completed her dual residency in Low-Vision Rehabilitation and Ocular Disease at the Diecke Center, Lighthouse for the Blind and the Illinois College of Optometry.

HOMEOWNERSHIP: BENCHMARK FOR A VITAL COMMUNITY
Wednesday, Feb. 13
Building K, West Commons

It is so American! Citizens of the United States feel you are not a success until you own your home. But … if you live in DuPage County you might be squeezed out of the market by skyrocketing prices. Where does your child’s teacher live? Can she afford a home in DuPage? How about the person fixing your TV …mowing your lawn … repairing your ailing car …stacking the cans of soup on your grocer’s shelves?

Two presenters, Susannah Levine and Jan Kay, discuss the social impact of economic segregation. Levine is the senior policy analyst for Business and Professional People for the Public Interest (BPI). BPI is a public interest law and policy center addressing issues of social justice throughout the Chicago region. BPI works to increase the supply of moderately priced housing throughout the region and particularly in job-rich areas. Levine earned her master’s degree in Public Policy at the University of Chicago.

Jan Kay, a Wheaton resident, has been active in local housing issues for many years. She is president of the Wheaton League of Women Voters and social policy specialist for the Illinois League of Women Voters.

BOOSTERS, BRAGGARTS AND BENEFACTORS: THE COMPETITION TO BECOME DUPAGE COUNTY’S GREATEST PIONEER
Wednesday, Feb. 20
Building K, West Commons

In the 1830s, DuPage County saw countless pioneers come to Illinois to make new homes for themselves. However, these settlers did not come here merely for the cheap land; they came to make new communities in their own image. Names like Hobson, Naper, Downer, Warren and Wheaton began to dot the landscape. Soon, these settlers and their new communities began to compete to see which would gain supremacy as DuPage’s greatest new community. Join Jody A. Crago, executive director of the DuPage County Historical Museum, as he discusses all of the boosters, braggarts and benefactors that made DuPage what it is today.

COFFEE HOUSE
Wednesday, Feb. 27
Building K, Room 161

If you have never attended an OAI Coffee House, you have missed a most enjoyable afternoon. Many talented writers are associated with the Older Adult Institute, and this is an opportunity for them to read their poetry, essays, short stories and letters to an interested audience. If you are a writer, bring your work to the Coffee House and read for us. You do not have to reserve time in advance. If you would rather just listen, that’s ok, too. The more the merrier! And we really do serve coffee and cookies. It’s a fun afternoon.

REVERSE MORTGAGES
Wednesday, March 5
Building K, West Commons

By tapping into their home equity with a reverse mortgage, senior homeowners can get the tax-free cash they need — for long term care insurance, travel, home repairs or any other needs — without reducing their savings or giving up their home. Learn what a reverse mortgage is: the benefits, how one qualifies, how much money is made available, the costs, the impact on home equity, and all other aspects regarding this government-sponsored loan for seniors. The presenter, Jerry Pearson, is a reverse mortgage specialist from Financial Freedom Senior Funding Corporation. Pearson provides reverse mortgage information for clients of Community Bank of Wheaton/Glen Ellyn.
