What
is the right class for my child?
French,
German, Italian and Spanish classes are available for pre-school through
eighth grade students. Each class meets once a week for 10 weeks per
quarter and follows the college calendar. The Discover Program
is an educational, fun and exciting way to introduce pre-school to first-grade
students to another language. The Elementary Program offers language
study for second, third and fourth graders, and students in fifth through
eighth grades attain proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and
writing.
Students with elementary level reading
skills who have graduated from our Discover Program or are
just beginning language study develop listening, speaking and reading
skills in Arabic, Chinese, French, German and Spanish. Students may
choose to complete one or more years of study in each language before
moving on to a grammar-based approach.
Upper elementary or middle school
students can take French Is Fun, German Is Fun, Italian Is
Fun or Spanish Is Fun. These six-semester programs tackle comprehensive
language study including grammar, providing students with the equivalent
of one year of high school study. These courses may assist students
in more advanced placement upon entering high school.
High school students
are now eligible to enroll in beginning adult conversation classes in
one of 13 different languages. Whether as a supplement to current high
school language study or as an introduction to a new language, classes
in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese,
Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish are now available to
teens each fall, winter and spring quarter.
