Getting Started
Independent-learning courses provide the same college-level
content that is covered in their classroom counterparts. In fact, your
transcript will list the course and grade you earned just as if you
were enrolled in a classroom-based course. In other words, you earn
full college credit for courses taken through the Centers for Independent
Learning (CILs).
To enroll
First, you should review a course description from the college’s
course Catalog and a summary of the course expectations prior to making
a decision. Next, you can review the to identify a distance-learning
course by referencing the discipline or subject area. At the end of
the subject area listing, look for the subheading that reads “On
campus, self-paced, flexible learning” or “Off-campus, flexible,
self-paced learning.” Decide which particular center location
and delivery format is appropriate and convenient. Note the five-digit
registration code. You can use this code number to
register online, by phone (630) 942-3948, or in person on campus
in Glen Ellyn.
You may gain additional general information about Admissions and Registration,
including the registration calendar, through the college’s web
site. Following registration, but prior to the first day of classes,
students enrolling in an appointment-based course must call the center
where they are registered to establish an appointment time. Most independent-learning
courses allow students to register after the term begins with the permission
of the instructor.
Course materials
Textbooks may be purchased from the college bookstore on campus, at
a local off-campus bookstore, or online at
www.cod.bkstr.com. You can conveniently arrange for UPS shipping
by calling the C.O.D. bookstore at (630) 942-3883. Course materials,
such as syllabi, course handbooks and study guides, will be sent to
the student’s home by U.S. Mail. Audio and videotapes may be conveniently
checked out at the off-campus centers. The Library,
located in the Student Resource Center, Room 2600, (630) 942-2350, will
also rent the full set of videotapes to distance learners. Audiotapes
for CIL courses may be purchased in the C.O.D. Bookstore.
After registering for an independent-learning course, students have
access to a faculty member to facilitate your learning. Instructors
are available to assist and interact with students in person during
regularly scheduled hours in the centers, as well as by phone, voice-mail,
e-mail and fax links. During a short orientation, students learn about
the course and the instructor’s expectations. Instructors can
offer flexible time frames for starting and finishing courses and provide
coaching on how to study for an independent-learning course.
Taking tests
Tests are taken in a testing lab conveniently located at each of the
CILs. You can choose from a variety of learning situations at convenient
times and locations as you study at your own pace using one of the following
formats: telecourses, appointment-based courses, open lab and walk-in
courses, group instruction, and cablecast courses.
