Delivery Formats
Flexible Learning courses are delivered in a variety
of formats: appointment-based courses
telecourses, open-lab and walk-in courses and group instruction.
Appointment-Based Courses
During a regularly scheduled, weekly 10-minute appointment with an
instructor, students are coached and encouraged through their coursework.
Between appointments, using the syllabus as a guide to textbook and
supplementary materials, students work on their own.
Telecourses
Generally, there is no attendance requirement for students who take
telecourses. While the design of these courses allows students to work
freely at their own pace, faculty are available for guidance during
regular hours, without an appointment. In a telecourse, students read
the textbook, review the media components, complete assignments or projects,
and use a study guide to reinforce and review the material. Printed
course materials that pace you through your course are sent to your
home, are made available online, or are available for pick up at the
Center for Independent Learning at Glen Ellyn.
Open-Lab and Walk-In Courses
Seventeen math courses and telecourses courses are offered in
a walk-in format. An initial mandatory orientation is provided to each
student. Subsequent assistance from instructors is available on an
individualized basis, as needed by the student. Appointments are not
necessary. Faculty members meet with students on a first-come, first-served
basis.
Group Instruction
In foreign language courses, a weekly 50-minute group session with a
skilled language instructor provides the opportunity to use and perfect
newly acquired language skills with other students.
